McLaughlin Man Sentenced for Sexual Assault

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a McLaughlin man charged with Sexual Assault was sentenced on July 23, 2012, by United States District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Sheldon Gerry, age 37, was sentenced to 36 months in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Gerry was indicted for two counts of Sexual Abuse and one count of Sexual Contact by a federal grand jury on March 8, 2011. He pled guilty to Sexual Contact with a Person Incapable of Consenting on April 27, 2012. The conviction arose from a January 2011 incident in which Gerry had sexual contact with a McLaughlin woman.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant United States Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case.

Gerry was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal to begin serving his sentence.
