U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Fort Thompson man charged with Sexual Abuse of a Minor was sentenced on September 4, 2012, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Kyle Merritt, age 25, was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in custody, a period of supervised release of 5 years, a $100 special assessment, and required to register as a sex offender.

Merritt was indicted for Sexual Abuse of a Minor by a federal grand jury in January 2012. The conviction stems from an incident in June 2008 when Merritt did knowingly cause and attempt to cause a minor to engage in a sexual act. He pled guilty to the charge on March 23, 2012.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.

Merritt is being allowed to self-report to the U.S. Marshal’s Service by 3:00 p.m. on September 18, 2012.
