Lower Brule Man Sentenced on Burglary Charge

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Lower Brule man charged with Third Degree Burglary was sentenced on September 11, 2012, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Tyler Walters, age 25, was sentenced to 4 months in custody and 4 months of home confinement, 3 years of supervised release, and $5,476.20 restitution.

Walters was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 14, 2012. He pled guilty to the burglary charge in June 2012.

The conviction stems from an incident on July 17, 2011, when Walters and another individual broke into a store in Lower Brule by breaking a window and pulling back the mesh screen. After entering the store, they stole items totaling over $3,000, and caused $1,500 in damages. Walters was identified by law enforcement from surveillance tapes.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.

Walters was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
