McLaughlin Man Charged with Firearm and Wildlife Violations

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a McLaughlin, South Dakota, man has been charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Sale and Purchase of Wildlife in Violation of Tribal Law.

Jess Porras, age 52, appeared before United States Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on October 23, 2012, in Aberdeen and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both.

The charges are merely accusations, and Porras is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by United States Fish & Wildlife. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Troy R. Morley.

Porras was released. A trial date has not been set.
