Eagle Butte Man Sentenced for Firearm Violation

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte man charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person was sentenced on October 25, 2012, by US District Judge Roberto A. Lange.  Louden Garreau, age 25, was sentenced to 60 months in custody, 2 years of supervised release, $291.50 in restitution, and $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund. 

Garreau was indicted for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm by a federal grand jury on May 8, 2012, and pled guilty to the charge. 

The conviction stems from an incident in April 2012 when Garreau had in his possession a 9mm Hi-Point, Semi-Automatic handgun, loaded, with extra ammunition. He and his girlfriend drove to the cemetery, where he shot the gun several times for fun.

Garreau was previously convicted of a felony in Pennington County.  As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Assistant US Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case. 

Garreau was immediately turned over to the custody of the US Marshal.
