Dupree Man Arraigned on Burglary and Assault Charges

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Dupree man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for First Degree Burglary and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

William Vandervier, age 26, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 15, 2012. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 29, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 25 years' imprisonment on the burglary charge and 10 years' imprisonment on the assault charge. Both charges include a $250,000 fine and a period of supervised release of 3 years. The charges are merely accusations, and Vandervier is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich is prosecuting the case. Vandervier was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
