Rapid City Man Arraigned on Assault Charges

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rapid City man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Jeffrey M. Chips, a/k/a Jeffrey M. Chipps, age 22, was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 16, 2012. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 6, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty on each count upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both. The charges are merely accusations, and Chips is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley is prosecuting the case. Chips was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
