United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an El Cajon, California, woman pled guilty to the charge of Failure to Pay Legal Child Support and was sentenced on December 29, 2011, by United States District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Karla R. Atkins, a/k/a Karla R. Hanson, age 47, was sentenced to 5 years' probation, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $34,368.17.
In March 1997, Atkins was ordered by the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court, Lawrence County, South Dakota, to pay $287 per month for her minor children. The support order was subsequently modified to $216 per month. By the time of her sentencing, the total arrearage amount was $34,368.17.
This case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.
