United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Paul Doering, age 49, of Summerset, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on January 19, 2012, and pled guilty to a charge of Tampering. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
On June 17, 2011, in Hill City, South Dakota, Doering concealed firearms and ammunition, which were evidence that he had possessed and discharged firearms, with intent to impair their availability for use in an official proceeding. Doering also attempted to prevent the detection of firearms by requesting that another individual take guns away from the scene of a shooting in Hill City.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for April 9, 2012. The defendant was released on bond pending sentencing.
