United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Summerset man charged with Tampering was sentenced on April 9, 2012, by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Paul Doering, age 49, was sentenced to 90 months' imprisonment, 3 years' supervised release, and was ordered to pay a $100 assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
On June 17, 2011, in Hill City, South Dakota, Doering concealed firearms and ammunition, which were evidence that he had possessed and discharged firearms, and that he intended to hide them to prevent them from being used in a criminal investigation. Doering also attempted to prevent law enforcement from finding the guns by requesting that another individual take the guns away from the scene of a shooting in Hill City. Doering pleaded guilty on January 19, 2012.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.
Doering was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
