Colorado Woman Charged With Stealing From Mt. Rushmore Gift Shop

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Colorado woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for stealing jewelry, clothing, and other items from the gift shop at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial.

Raquel Janet Diaz, age 34, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2012, for Larceny. She appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on May 21, 2012, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

The charge is merely an accusation, and Diaz is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case. Diaz was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
