Rapid City Man Indicted for Assaulting a Park Ranger

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rapid City man was indicted by a federal grand jury for assaulting a park ranger at Horsethief Lake Campground.

Cody Gallagher, age 25, was indicted on July 24, 2012, for Assault on a Federal Officer. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on August 13, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 8 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charge is merely an accusation, and Gallagher is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the case. Gallagher was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
