Maryland Woman Sentenced to 78 Months in Prison for Perpetrating Multi-State Identity Theft Scheme
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Latrenda D. Fleming, 37, of District Heights, Md. was sentenced today to 78 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for using stolen identities to pass nearly $270,000 in counterfeit checks in three states and the District of Columbia.
Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; David Beach, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service’s Washington Field Office; and Earl Cook, Alexandria Chief of Police, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Anthony J. Trenga. Fleming pleaded guilty on Dec. 9, 2010, to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
According to court documents, Fleming, whose history of convictions for fraud offenses goes back to 1993, used the stolen driver’s licenses of at least seven individuals, along with counterfeit personal checks bearing those individuals’ names, to make purchases from more than 40 retail stores in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.
This case was investigated by the Alexandria Police Department and the United States Secret Service’s Metropolitan Area Fraud Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Paul Nathanson prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
