United States Attorney John McKay is being honored by the U.S. Navy for Distinguished Public Service to the Department of the Navy. The award, the highest civilian honor given by the Navy, highlights McKay’s leadership on keeping the citizens of Western Washington safe through innovative law enforcement collaboration. The award, signed by former Secretary of the Navy, Gordon England, cites McKay’s efforts to create the Washington Joint Analytic Center for real time analysis of criminal and terrorist threats, and the creation of the Northwest Law Enforcement Exchange (LInX), a cutting edge database designed to allow the sharing of law enforcement records.

Navy officials presented the award to McKay last week in Washington D.C. The award notes that McKay was honored by the Deputy Attorney General for his leadership on information sharing. The text of the award states that McKay was appointed to lead the integration of the LInX system throughout the Department of Justice law enforcement agencies. The award concludes, “Mr. McKay’s initiative, perseverance, and noteworthy achievements reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Department of Justice, and are in keeping with the highest traditions of public service.” The complete text of the award is available after noon PST today at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/waw/about/mckay_award.html.

McKay announced in December that after five years as United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington, he is moving on to new challenges in the private sector. His last day as United States Attorney is January 26, 2007.
