DAVID EUGENE THOMPSON, SR., 52, of Hamilton, Washington, entered a guilty plea to being a Felon in Possession of Firearms today in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of ten years.

His son DAVID EUGENE THOMPSON, JR., 28, pleaded guilty to Misprision of a Felony for failing to inform law enforcement officials that his father was illegally in possession of the guns. The maximum sentence for that crime is three years in prison.

Sentencing for both men is scheduled for August 8, 2008, at 2:15 before the Honorable Marsha J. Pechman in Seattle.

The case arose when deputies of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Department received information that the Thompsons had several guns in the residence they share near Hamilton, Washington. The department was very familiar with the Thompsons and had made several official visits to the residence over the years. Armed with a search warrant, sheriff’s deputies, including the county SWAT team, searched the Thompson residence on August 23, 2007. They found eight rifles and pistols as well as ammunition for the guns. Because both father and son had been convicted in Skagit County Superior Court for felonies including illegal possession of firearms and assault, the deputies seized the guns and arrested both father and son for Unlawful Possession of Firearms. The case was adopted for federal prosecution at the request of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Department and the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

This case was investigated by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
