Milwaukee Man Indicted for possession of dangerous weapons in federal courthouse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 15, 2011

United States Attorney James L. Santelle announced that a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Wisconsin returned an indictment charging John Joseph Eagan, (age: 32) of Milwaukee with possession of a dangerous weapon in a federal facility in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 930(b).

The indictment alleges that the defendant possessed two (2) knives in the Historic Federal Courthouse, located at 517 East Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and that Eagan intended to use these weapons to assault federal court security officers.

The defendant faces up to 5 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000 and three years supervised release. The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gail J. Hoffman.

“The United States Marshal Service and Court Security Officers are to be commended,” said United States Attorney Santelle. “Their decisive and quick reactions prevented a tragic event.”

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
