Former Corrections Officer Sentenced on Bribery Charge

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A former Corrections Officer was sentenced on March 3, 2009, in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Judge Irene M. Keeley.

United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that ROBERT D. SNYDER, age 34, of Oakland, Maryland, was sentenced to five months imprisonment to be followed by five months home detention and three years supervised release. SNYDER, formerly a Correctional Officer assigned to the United States Penitentiary at Hazelton, entered a plea of guilty to a one-count Information charging him with bribery after receiving United States currency from an inmate housed at the penitentiary in exchange for contraband (smokeless tobacco).

SNYDER is free on bond and will self-report to a designated federal institution.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David E. Godwin. The case was investigated by the Office of the Inspector General’s Washington Field Office, the USP Hazelton SIS, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
