Hedgesville Resident Enters Guilty Plea to Tax Charge
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 66 year old Hedgesville, West Virginia, resident entered a plea of guilty today (April 15, 2010), in United States District Court in Martinsburg before Magistrate Judge David J. Joel.
Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that ROBERT CHARLES HARBAUGH entered a plea of guilty to one count of tax evasion for the tax year 2006. The charge states that from January 1, 2006, through April 15, 2007, HARBAUGH attempted to evade a large part of income tax due and owing by him in an amount up to $214,752, by disguising his income from his business as expenses on the business’s accounting records, then depositing the money into his personal bank account and significantly under-reporting his income for that tax year to the Internal Revenue Service.
HARBAUGH, who is free on bond pending sentencing, faces a maximum exposure of five years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert H. McWilliams, Jr. and was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division.
