Wheeling Resident Sentenced for
Transportation of Child Pornography

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA - A 23 year old Wheeling, West Virginia, resident was sentenced on February 19, 2010, in United States District Court in Wheeling by Judge Frederick P. Stamp, Jr.

Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that GARRETT CARRIGAN was sentenced to 120 months imprisonment to be followed by 10 years of supervised release. CARRIGAN entered a plea of guilty on December 1, 2009, to one count of transportation of child pornography via a computer on July 13, 2009, in Wheeling. CARRIGAN was also ordered to make restitution in the amount of $728.52.

CARRIGAN was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending designation to a federal institution.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David J. Perri and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Wheeling and New Mexico.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
