Kearneysville Resident Entered Guilty Pleas

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - A 38 year old Kearneysville, West Virginia, resident entered guilty pleas on March 24, 2010, in United States District Court in Martinsburg before Magistrate Judge David J. Joel.

Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that KAREN MICHELLE SHRADER entered guilty pleas to two counts of an Information. Specifically, SHRADER entered guilty pleas to failure to file a federal tax return for the calendar year 2007 and the unauthorized use of a credit card. Evidence presented at the plea hearing showed that SHRADER, who was the office manager for the West Virginia Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association located in Charles Town, West Virginia, fraudulently used Association funds and credit cards for her own personal use. As part of her plea, SHRADER agreed to make restitution in the amount of $106,656.59.

SHRADER, who is currently free on bond pending sentencing, faces a maximum penalty of one year imprisonment and a fine of $100,000 on the tax violation; and a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 on the credit card charge.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Erin K. Reisenweber. The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division and the Ranson Police Department.
