CHARLESTON, W.Va. –U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin today charged a Charleston woman with presenting a false tax claim to the United States. Deborah S. Starks, 55, of Charleston, was charged in federal district court in Charleston.

According to a court document filed today, on April 15, 2009, Starks filed a false 2008 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Form 1040 claiming reported taxable income for that year to be $13,872, but knew that her true taxable income for 2008 was greatly in excess of that reported amount.

Starks faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The case was investigated by the IRS. Assistant United States Attorney Eumi L. Choi is in charge of the prosecution.
