HUNTINGTON MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin today announced that a Huntington man was sentenced to one year and nine months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Michael Jackson, 40, of Huntington, previously pleaded guilty in July. Jackson admitted that on June 18, 2007, he possessed a loaded .380 caliber pistol near Barboursville, W.Va. The firearm traveled in interstate commerce prior to being possessed by the defendant.
Jackson was previously convicted in November 1995 in the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Wayne County, Michigan of attempted unarmed robbery. The defendant did not have his right to possess a firearm restored.
The investigation was conducted by the West Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Lisa Johnston handled the prosecution.
This case is also being brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun crime in the United States by networking existing local programs targeting gun crime.
