The Land Acquisition Section secured sites for the expansion of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Congress authorized the creation of the National Lakeshore in 1966. With 15 miles of beaches, sand dunes, bogs, marshes, swamps, fens, prairies, rivers, oak savannas, and woodland forests, the area is unique because it contains Arctic and boreal plants alongside desert plants.

The precursor to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was the National Dunes Park Association (NDPA), a group of concerned citizens advocating for dunes preservation in the face of rapid industrialization in the area – particularly after glass-making companies carried the largest dune, 200-foot tall Hoosier Slide, away in railroad boxcars.
