The Land Acquisition Section secured the site for the preservation of Gettysburg National Military Park. Established as a Park in 1895, Gettysburg’s purpose is to serve as a memorial to the two armies that fought in the pivotal Civil War battle, to preserve the lines of battle, and to remember the historic Address given by Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the Soldiers’ Cemetery in 1863. United States v. Gettysburg Electric Railroad Company, which established the right of the Government to condemn property for the National Park, served as an early guideline for the use of the federal power of eminent domain. United States v. Gettysburg Electric Ry., 160 U.S. 668, 679 (1896).
