Guidance for Submitting a FOIA Request or Administrative Appeal to OIP

Submitting a FOIA Request

OIP processes requests for records of the seven offices listed above. When making your request, please specify which office you are seeking records from and describe the records you seek. For more information, please visit the Make a FOIA Request to DOJ page of our website.

Submitting a FOIA Administrative Appeal

OIP adjudicates appeals from the actions of any Department of Justice component. When submitting an administrative appeal to OIP, you must identify the component of the Department of Justice whose action you are appealing and/or provide the initial request number assigned by that component (if known). Your appeal must be postmarked or transmitted to OIP within ninety (90) days of the date of the letter from the component responding to your request.

Tracking a FOIA Request or Administrative Appeal through FOIA STAR

To track a submitted request or administrative appeal that you have submitted through FOIA STAR, login to your account to see a list of your submitted requests and/or administrative appeals.  In the “Status” column, you will see the current status of all of your submitted requests and/or administrative appeals.  If you need to provide additional information after submitting your request or appeal, please contact us.

If you had created an account in OIP’s previous FOIA portal system, FOIAonline, please note that OIP is no longer a participating agency of FOIAonline and no longer receives requests or appeals through the system.  OIP is transitioning its records out of the FOIAonline system in the coming weeks.  Once the transition is complete, you will not be able to access any requests or appeals submitted to OIP in this system, including any documents uploaded to your account, and you will not be able to obtain any updates on the status of your request or appeal from that system.

To receive status information on any FOIA request or administrative appeal submitted through that system, or to access any documents that were uploaded to your FOIAonline account please contact OIP’s FOIA Requester Service Center using the following information:

Department of Justice
6th Floor
441 G Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20530-0001
Phone: (202) 514-3642 (FOIA)
