Project Safe Neighborhoods

The National Project Safe Neighborhoods Program/Anti-Gang Initiative

Project Safe Neighborhoods and Anti-Gang Initiative (PSN/AGI) is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun violence and violent crime by networking existing local programs that target gun and gang crime and providing these programs with the additional tools necessary to be successful. The goal is to take a hard line against gun criminals and gangs through every available means in an effort to make our streets and communities safer. PSN/AGI seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement, with an emphasis on tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, training, deterring juveniles way from the criminal justice system, and developing and promoting meaningful community outreach efforts. The initiative is led by the U.S. Attorney in each of the 94 federal judicial districts across America.

PSN/AGI is based on these three fundamental principles:

  • Comprehensive – While enforcement is a necessary and important aspect of crime reduction programs, the most successful initiatives marry enforcement with prevention and deterrence efforts.
  • Coordinated – Programs that ensure coordination between the enforcement, deterrence and prevention efforts are more likely to succeed than those that do not.
  • Community-based – Gun crime is local, and the resources available to address it vary from district to district. Accordingly, any national gun crime reduction program must remain sufficiently flexible for jurisdictions to implement it in a way that both responds to the specific problem in that area, and accounts for the particular local capacities and resources that can be dedicated to it.
