U.S. Attorney Charles M. Oberly, III

Charles M. Oberly, III was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the District of Delaware on December 28, 2010.

Mr. Oberly received his A.A. degree from Wesley College, and his B.A. from Penn State, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

He began his legal career as a Law Clerk for the Honorable James L. Latchum of the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. 

From 1976 to 1995 Mr. Oberly worked in the Delaware Attorney General’s office where he held the positions of criminal deputy, appellate chief, state prosecutor, and was in 1982 elected to the first of his three four-year terms as Delaware’s Attorney General.

Between the years of 1995 and his appointment as United States Attorney in 2010, Mr. Oberly formed his own law firm, which later merged with a large Philadelphia law firm, specializing in criminal defense work.

Mr. Oberly has appeared before and tried cases in all Delaware State and Federal Courts as well as argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

A longtime member of the Delaware Bar, Mr. Oberly was a founder and co-editor of the Delaware Law Monthly, a publication that reported all significant Delaware State Court decisions for nearly two decades before ceasing publication in 1997.

Mr. Oberly has five children, is married to Lynne Parker, and resides in Wilmington, Delaware.
