Victim Witness Assistance
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida is committed to ensuring that federal crime victims are afforded all rights to which they are entitled by law. To accomplish this goal, each office has designated staff to provide victim and witness support. Those staff members comprise the
Victim Witness Assistance Unit and provide statutory services to victims and witnesses identified in cases prosecuted by this office.
Victim Witness staff provide a variety of services to victims and witnesses in the federal criminal justice system, including education on criminal justice processes, courtroom orientation, notice of significant case events, and financial and logistical assistance when attending court proceedings. Victim Witness staff also assist crime victims in exercising their rights to presence and allocution at court proceedings and serve as a resource in providing referrals to assistance groups and counseling programs.
Criminal cases prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office are referred to the office by investigative agencies. Agencies also may have statutory responsibilities to victims and witnesses involved in a particular case. While the investigative agent has a continuing role throughout the case, the United States Attorney’s Office usually begins its responsibilities to victims and witnesses once federal charges are filed, and the charges are made public.
Questions concerning federal crime victims’ and witnesses’ rights or information regarding the Victim Witness Assistance Program can be addressed to the appropriate representative in each district office.
