Civil Division

The Civil Division of the office represents the United States, its agencies, departments and their officers in federal and state courts in the Eastern District of Missouri. Representation can be in defensive or affirmative litigation.

Defensive litigation may involve claims for personal injuries, employment discrimination, suits against federal officers and challenges to agency actions. Defense of these cases is important in order to protect the public's money and the integrity of government programs. Affirmative litigation may involve claims of the government for health care fraud, contractor fraud, recovery of overpayments by federal programs and recovery of money owed to the government. These cases are brought to prevent monetary loss as a result of fraud and abuse.

The Civil Division can best be described as the United States' lawyer in civil court cases.

The Civil Division is headed by Civil Chief Nicholas P. Llewellyn.
