Welcome
Welcome to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York which encompasses 17 counties: Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, Yates, Steuben, Schuyler and Chemung.
With Offices in Buffalo and Rochester, the United States Attorney is the principal Federal Law Enforcement Officer in the District and prosecutes all violations of the Federal Criminal Law. The Office also represents every Federal agency in civil cases and matters. United States Attorneys have three statutory responsibilities:
- the prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal government;
- the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and
- the collection of debts owed the Federal government which are administratively uncollectible.
Among the many statutes found in Federal law, the United States Attorney’s Office prosecutes such crimes as terrorism, organized crime, serious narcotics trafficking, complex fraud schemes, public corruption, human trafficking, child pornography and much more.
In addition to discharging the core areas of our responsibility, the Office undertakes numerous other steps to improve the quality of life in the community, and proactively addresses both emerging and entrenched public safety issues and concerns. The United States Attorney, Assistant U.S. Attorneys and staff members meet regularly with community groups, civil and religious organizations, and students to ensure that their voices are heard and concerns are addressed. The Office also sponsors frequent training and public interest forums to educate the public, business community, and members of law enforcement at all levels of Government.
