ABSTRACT: This system of records and its component subsystems permits the USAO for the District of Columbia to maintain, compile and track criminal case files and case materials from the pre-trial stage through the final appellate stage.

PURPOSE: This system was established and is maintained as a tool for pursuing a criminal matter through the completion of the appellate process. It permits uniformity and efficiency in the day to day prosecutorial proceedings.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: The information contained in the records system is both classified and unclassified and is safeguarded and protected by being stored in filerooms which are staffed with personnel during working hours and are otherwise locked at all times. The buildings in which the file rooms are located are guarded by the Federal Protective Service twenty four hours a day with roving patrols after working hours. The files checked out to attorneys are maintained in locked offices after working hours.

AGENCY PROGRAM: The USAOs are charged with the enforcement of United States law both civil and criminal in conjunction with the Department of Justice. Compilation, maintenance and tracking of criminal case files through completion of the appeals process serves as a valuable organizational tool in pursuing the law enforcement goals of the United States government.

SOURCES OF DATA: The information contained in this system includes investigative reports of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, witness information, grand jury transcripts, court transcripts, memoranda and reports from the court, and attorney work product of AUSAs assigned to the cases.
