E. Martin Estrada

Martin Estrada is the United States Attorney for the Central District of California. He was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate.

As United States Attorney, Mr. Estrada oversees the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in the Central District of California, which is the largest U.S. Attorney’s Office outside of D.C., serving seven counties and nearly 20 million people. He supervises all federal government litigation for the Criminal, National Security, Civil, and Tax Divisions, including cases involving public corruption, civil rights violations, corporate fraud, cybercrime, domestic and international terrorism, violent and organized crime, environmental violations, and narcotics trafficking, and a wide range of affirmative and defensive litigation, including asset forfeiture, financial litigation, and programs fraud.

Mr. Estrada has repeatedly been recognized for his advocacy, having been named a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California by the Daily Journal, and among the “Top Litigators in Los Angeles,” a “Minority Leader of Influence,” and one of the “Most Influential Minority Lawyers in Los Angeles” by the Los Angeles Business Journal. He is also a two-time recipient of the California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) award, and has received numerous other recognitions for his work, including awards from the Federal Bar Association, the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, and the Daily Journal.

Prior to becoming United States Attorney on September 19, 2022, Mr. Estrada was a partner at the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, where he also worked as an associate between 2004 and 2007. In private practice, Mr. Estrada was an active member of the legal and civic communities, handling numerous major pro bono matters and serving on the boards of the Federal Bar Association of Los Angeles, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and the Alliance for Children’s Rights, and past member of the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE) of the State Bar of California. He was also an adjunct professor for Loyola Law School’s Ninth Circuit Appellate Clinic, part of the Alarcón Advocacy Project, where his teams repeatedly achieved success for indigent clients.

From 2007 to 2014, Mr. Estrada served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, where he held various leadership positions, including Deputy Chief of the Violent and Organized Crime Section and International Organized Crime Coordinator. As a prosecutor, Mr. Estrada prosecuted a broad spectrum of criminal violations and received the U.S. Department of Justice’s prestigious Director’s Award for Superior Performance.

Mr. Estrada clerked for Judge Arthur L. Alarcón of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 2003 to 2004, and he clerked for U.S. District Judge Robert J. Timlin of the Central District of California from 2002 to 2003.

Mr. Estrada received his J.D., with distinction, from Stanford Law School in 2002 and his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of California at Irvine in 1998.

Mr. Estrada grew up in the Central District of California after his family emigrated to the United States from Guatemala. He is fluent in Spanish.
