Divisions

Civil Division

The Civil Division represents the United States, its departments and agencies, Members of Congress and other federal employees in any civil or criminal matter within its scope of responsibility. The Civil Division’s responsibilities include ensuring the Federal Government speaks with one voice in its view of the law; preserving the intent of Congress; advancing the credibility of the government before the courts; and protecting the public. The Civil Division's legal practice includes both defensive and affirmative litigation.

Criminal Division

The Criminal Division develops, enforces, and supervises the application of all federal criminal laws except those specifically assigned to other divisions. Criminal Division attorneys prosecute many nationally significant cases. In addition to its direct litigation responsibilities, the Division formulates and implements criminal enforcement policy and provides advice and assistance.
