Financial Litigation Unit

The Financial Litigation Unit ("FLU") has responsibility for recovering monies owed the government in criminal cases or civil debts arising from breach of contract, defaulted loans, and failure to pay administrative fines and penalties. The FLU’s primary purpose is to enforce criminal restitution orders for the benefit of victims private and public. FLU staff work closely with prosecutors in cases involving restitution to identify assets of defendants that may be available for recovery for victims under the Mandatory Victims Restitution Act. Once a criminal defendant is released from prison to serve a term of supervised release under the supervision of the United States Probation Office, the FLU staff work closely with supervising probation officers to ensure that available assets are used to pay restitution to victims of crime. The FLU often annually collects funds exceeding the annual budget of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
