United States Attorney Recognizes National Police Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. — In honor of National Police Week, Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, recognized the service and sacrifice of federal, state, and local law enforcement.  National Police Week is observed Saturday, May 11 through Friday, May 17, 2024.

“Committing to serve the community is just the first of many sacrifices that members of law enforcement make when they enter into public service,” said U.S. Attorney Shier.  “The work that follows is demanding, persistent, and hazardous.  But this work is essential to making our communities safer.  It is patrolling our streets, responding to calls for help, and assisting others despite those dangers.  National Police Week reminds us to collectively reflect on the sacrifices of members of law enforcement and their families, and provides an opportunity to show our sincere appreciation for their essential service to us all.”

In 1962, President Kennedy issued the first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices.  Peace Officers Memorial Day, which falls every year on May 15, specifically honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Each year, during National Police Week, our nation celebrates the contributions of law enforcement from around the country, recognizing their hard work, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to keeping our communities safe.
