Project Sentry

Project Sentry includes the investigation and prosecution of:

  • adults who illegally furnish juveniles with firearms
  • gang related crimes involving the use or possession of firearms where juveniles are members
  • possession of firearms in & around school grounds

This initiative is not only a tool of enforcement an outreach effort. Project Sentry seeks to promote safe schools by organizing programs that target gun violence in and around school grounds. Working with school officials, the community and students to establish new and innovative ideas that will educate and motivate our young people.

One such outreach effort is The National Day of Concern. Every year in October there is a nationwide observance to give our school children the opportunity to sign a Student Pledge Against Gun Violence. The Pledge provides in substance that students will not carry guns to school or use a gun to resolve disputes. By giving our students the chance to sign a pledge in the company of their peers, knowing that other students across the state and country are doing the same, we cause our young people to think about the toll of gun violence on their generation and encourage them to envision ways to diminish this threat to their health and safety.

Our second annual event is the Project Sentry Logo Contest. Every year in April we ask the students of South Carolina to submit drawings that represent gun violence prevention in their schools. It is usually the week of the Columbine memorial in an effort to create a dialogue about gun violence. Our judges are DJJ students, which allows us to reach out to another group of young people who need our attention In the end we award four winners with US Savings Bonds.
