Charles B. Renfrew was the 18th Deputy Attorney General of the United States.

President Jimmy Carter nominated Mr. Renfrew for the Department’s second-ranking position in November 1979. He was appointed Deputy Attorney General in February 1980 and would serve in that post until March 1981.

At the time of his nomination, Mr. Renfrew was serving as a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of California, an appointment he attained in 1971.

Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Renfrew commenced his legal career at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro in San Francisco, California, then the largest law firm on the U.S. West Coast. He became a partner at the firm in 1965.

A native of Michigan and a veteran of both the U.S. Navy (1946 to 1948) and the U.S. Army (1952 to 1953), Mr. Renfrew received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1952 and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1956.
