Deputy Attorney General: Paul J. McNulty

Paul J. McNulty was the 32nd Deputy Attorney General of the United States. He served as the Department’s second-ranking official from March 2006 to July 2007.
Mr. McNulty served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia from September 2001 to March 2006. During his tenure, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Eastern Virginia grew more than 20 percent and prioritized the prosecution of terrorism, gun violence, drug trafficking, and corporate fraud.
Prior to becoming U.S. Attorney, Mr. McNulty directed President George W. Bush’s transition team for the Department of Justice and then served as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General. During the administration of President George H.W. Bush (1989 to 1993), he was the Department’s director of policy and chief spokesperson.
Mr. McNulty served for over 10 years as a senior attorney in the United States Congress, including as Chief Counsel and Director of Legislative Operations for the House Majority Leader and Chief Counsel for the House Subcommittee on Crime.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mr. McNulty attained his B.A. at Grove City College (1980) and his J.D. at Capital University School of Law School (1983).
