Peter F. Flaherty was the 16th Deputy Attorney General of the United States. He served as the Department’s second-ranking official from April 1977 to December 1977.

Mr. Flaherty engaged in the private practice of law in Pittsburgh from 1952 to 1957 and from 1964 to 1966. From 1957 to 1964 he served as Assistant District Attorney for Allegheny County. He was a councilman for the city of Pittsburgh from 1966 until 1970, when he was elected mayor. Mr. Flaherty went on to serve two mayoral terms between 1970 and 1977.

A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Flaherty served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged at the rank of captain. He attended Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and then University of Notre Dame Law School, receiving his J.D. in 1951.
