Brian Netter

Brian Netter has served as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Federal Programs Branch from April 26, 2021 to January 20, 2025.  Prior to joining the Department, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Mayer Brown LLP, where he had, at various times, co-chaired the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate litigation practice, its ERISA litigation practice, and the office’s attorney hiring committee.  During his time in private practice, Brian argued dozens of cases in federal trial and appellate courts.  He was recognized for his service in pro bono cases after defending the validity of the District of Columbia Budget Autonomy Act and securing the vacatur of a criminal defendant’s death sentence.

Brian is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale Law School and served as a law clerk to Judge Judith Rogers on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and to Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer.
