The Land Acquisition Section secured sites for the Appalachian Trail. Congress designated it the first National Scenic Trail in 1968 and approved funding for increased federal acquisition of properties surrounding the trail in 1978. Extending approximately 2,175 miles along the Eastern portion of the United States from Maine to Georgia, approximately 3 to 4 million people hike on the Appalachian Trail each year.
