Everglades National Park

The Land Acquisition Section secured sites for the 1947 creation of Everglades National Park and for subsequent expansions. Declared a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve, the Park is home to 36 species of animals designated as threatened or endangered, including the American crocodile and the Florida panther.

Did you know? The Everglades region is sometimes referred to as a "river of grass." This phrase was coined by Marjory Stoneman Douglas, whose 1947 book, The Everglades: River of Grass, greatly increased public awareness of the need for ecosystem conservation.
