Military Readiness

The Natural Resources Section plays an important role in protecting the Department of Defense's ability to conduct realistic training exercises to meet the United States’ national security interests. For example, NRS attorneys have successfully defended the U.S. Navy’s ability to conduct anti-submarine warfare training, the United States' continued military operations on Guam, the Navy’s efforts to qualify and train pilots for deployment to aircraft carriers, and the basing of new fighter jets at National Guard facilities. These cases implicate issues of national import and often involve legal challenges under not just NEPA, but also the Endangered Species Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.
