Sexual Assault Forensic Exam Grant Program: Purpose and Allowable Uses of Funds

Purpose: 

The Sexual Assault Forensic Exam Grant Program, formerly known as the SAFE Hiring and Training Program, provides grants to establish and expand programs that increase access to sexual assault medical forensic care. 

Grant funds can be used to:

• provide didactic and clinical preparation of prospective sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs)/sexual assault forensic examiners (SAFEs). 
• provide financial support for prospective SANEs/SAFEs to complete didactic training, clinical training, and certification exams (e.g., travel costs, participant stipends).
• provide regional preceptorships, including preceptorships in a program providing care to sexual assault patients’ medical forensic needs or in a simulation setting using medical simulation models and/or standardized patients. 
• pay fees related to national and/or state SANE/SAFE certification/credentialing, including certification/credentialing renewal. 
• provide continuing education after initial didactic and clinical training.
• provide salaries for full- and part-time SANE/SAFE instructors, including benefits. 
• provide advocacy and accompaniment services to patients who are victims of sexual assault.
• pay for travel expenses, supplies, or equipment associated with providing medical forensic examinations and/or clinical education.
• provide salaries for full- and part-time, on-call, and per-diem SANEs/SAFEs, including benefits, to 
  • perform a sexual assault medical forensic examination. 
  • perform follow-up care as needed to provide additional healing, treatment, or collection of evidence.
  • provide direction or consultation about medical forensic examination cases via telehealth. 
  • precept prospective SANEs/SAFEs.
  • participate in peer review of sexual assault cases. 
  • participate in multidisciplinary teams. 
  • provide court testimony, as a fact witness or expert witness, for a case. 
  • participate in quality assurance processes.
