Voting Section Cases

On March 27, 2025, in Kentuckians for the Commonwealth v. Adams, the Department filed a statement of interest regarding Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act.

On January 16, 2025, in United States v. Houston County, GA (M.D. Ga.), the Department filed a complaint under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act challenging the method of election of the county's board of commissioners.

On January 15, 2025, in United States v. Fayette County, TN (W.D. Tenn.), the Department filed a complaint under Section 2 challenging the county's 2021 redistricting plan for its county commission.

On January 7, 2025, in United States v. City of Hazleton, PA the Department filed a complaint under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act challenging the city's method of election for city council.

On November 27, 2024, in Wasserberg v. North Carolina Board of Elections (E.D. N.C.) the Department filed a statement of interest regarding Section 101 of the Civil Rights Act.

On October 28, 2024, in Disability Rights Louisiana v. Landry (M.D. La.), the Department filed a statement of interest regarding Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act.

On October 11, 2024, in United States v. Commonwealth of Virginia (E.D. Va. 2024), the Department filed a complaint under Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act. 

On September 27, 2024, in United States v. State of Alabama (N.D. Ala.), the Department filed a complaint under Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act alleging that Alabama‘s recently enacted program to systematically remove registered voters from the State’s voter rolls violated the NVRA’s Quiet Period Provision, which bars such efforts during the 90-day period before federal primary and general elections. On October 16, 2024, the court entered a preliminary injunction ordering the State of Alabama to cease that removal program until after the November 2024 federal general election. In addition, on October 9, 2024, the Department filed a statement of interest regarding Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act.

On September 20, 2024, in United States v. Town of Thornapple, WI (W.D. Wis.) the Department filed a complaint under Section 301 of the Help America Vote Act as well as a proposed consent decree.  The Department also filed a brief in support of its motion for preliminary injunction.

On August 27, 2024, in Public Interest Legal Foundation v. Simon, the Department filed notice of its intent to intervene in the action and filed a brief on the constitutionality of Section 4(b)(2) of the National Voter Registration Act on September 17, 2024.

On August 26, 2024, in Public Interest Legal Foundation v. Wolfe (W.D. Wis.), the Department filed notice of its intent to intervene in the action and filed a brief on the constitutionality of Section 4(b)(2) of the National Voter Registration Act on September 16, 2024.

On July 25, 2024, in League of Women Voters of New Hampshire v. Kramer (D.N.H.), the Department filed a statement of interest regarding Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act.
