Alan Hanson

Alan Hanson currently serves as the Director of the Appropriations Liaison Office in the Justice Management Division. He serves as the Department’s primary contact with the House and Senate Appropriations Committees.  Mr. Hanson also engages in internal consultation with Departmental Leadership to ensure that its priorities are being appropriately articulated and pursued through the Appropriations process. Mr. Hanson rejoined DOJ from the Department of Transportation (DOT), where he served in several leadership positions, including as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Secretary. In this capacity, Mr. Hanson was responsible for providing executive leadership and guidance on policy, legislative, and regulatory matters, including communications with stakeholders and Congress.  Prior to his tenure at DOT, Mr. Hanson worked at DOJ as the Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs (2017-2018).  Before working in the Executive Branch, he gained extensive experience working on Capitol Hill, including serving on the Professional Staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and most recently as the Chief of Staff and General Counsel for then-Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby. In this capacity, Mr. Hanson worked regularly with the Appropriations Committees and Subcommittees on a wide array of funding and policy matters. He also served as Legislative Director for then-Senator Jeff Sessions. Prior to that, Mr. Hanson served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for two Members of the House of Representatives. Mr. Hanson graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1998 and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University in 1994.
