James L. Dunlap

James L. Dunlap was appointed Director of Security for the United States Department of Justice February 8, 2004. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Deputy Assistant Director for the United States Secret Service, Office of Human Resources and Training; Deputy Assistant Director for the United States Secret Service, Office of Investigations; and as the Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the United States Secret Service. Mr. Dunlap began his law enforcement career in 1979 with the University of Georgia Police Department in Athens, GA.  In 1983, Mr. Dunlap became a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service in the Atlanta Field Office. His subsequent career assignments included duty on the former President Reagan Detail, the Presidential Protective Division, and the Secret Service’s Financial Crimes Division.  A native of Nashville, GA, Mr. Dunlap received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1981 and a Master of Science in Management and Leadership from the Johns Hopkins University in 2000. In September 2008, Mr. Dunlap received a Presidential Meritorious Rank Award. In October 1994, he received the Secretary’s Annual Award from U.S. Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bensen.  In October 1995, Mr. Dunlap received the Vice President’s Award For Excellence from Secretary of the Treasury Robert E. Rubin.  In February 2001, he received a Testimonial Resolution from the Detroit City Council for his outstanding service to the City of Detroit and the United States Secret Service. Mr. Dunlap is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
