USAO Facility Dog

A specially trained canine has joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office as the nation’s first U. S. Attorney’s Office facility dog. Maisy, a labrador retriever, works with crime victims providing comfort and support to children and adults who have suffered from extreme trauma. We have found that while human-to-human interaction is helpful for survivors, many are calmed even further by simply having Maisy at their side as they relay what is often a painful experience to law enforcement, prosecutors, and eventually a jury.  Maisy has become an integral part of the healing process using her skills to reduce anxiety for those with whom she is working.

While many dogs and other animals can be therapeutic, facility dogs like Maisy receive specialized training through accredited organizations such as Assistance Dogs International (ADI), a worldwide coalition of non-profit programs that trains and places assistance dogs. These dogs are trained to remain calm and quiet for long periods of time, so they are suited for their work in professional environments, including courthouses.
