Berkeley County man admits to filing false tax return

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Jay D. Dehaven, of Hedgesville, West Virginia, has admitted to filing a false tax return, United States Attorney Bill Powell announced.
 
Dehaven, age 39, pled guilty to one count of “Filing False Income Tax Return.” Dehaven admitted to understating his income by more than $136,000, resulting in an unpaid tax of more than $50,000. The crime took place in October 2016 in Berkeley County.

Dehaven faces up to 10 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod J. Douglas is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Internal Revenue Service investigated.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided.
