Acting Chief of Staff and Counselor

Jeffrey J. Izant

Jeffrey J. Izant was appointed Acting Chief of Staff in the Criminal Division in March 2024. In this role, Jeff established and implemented the strategic priorities and programmatic direction of the Division by advising the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General on a broad range of issues requiring leadership attention, including those relating to the management of the Division’s resources.

Prior to joining the Division, Jeff worked for the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Maryland, where he served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) since 2017 and as Cybercrime Counsel since 2021. While at the USAO, Jeff led a multitude of prosecutions from their inception through post-conviction, including national security crimes, fraud, identity theft, money laundering, drug trafficking, violent crime, witness tampering, cyberstalking, child exploitation, and sex trafficking, as well as complex, transnational cybercrime investigations of ransomware schemes, computer intrusions, data breaches, darkweb markets, account takeovers, cryptocurrency fraud, and intellectual property offenses. Jeff also served as the USAO’s National Security Cyber Specialist and Computer Hacking & Intellectual Property AUSA.

Before working for the Department, Jeff clerked for the Honorable Reena Raggi on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for the Honorable Nicholas G. Garaufis on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Jeff graduated cum laude from Princeton University (B.A.) and from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Business Law Review.
